The Uninvited Drone

Artist: Justin Ward

Project: Unmanned Landscapes

Description: Justin Ward’s Unmanned Landscapes uses a consumer-grade unmanned aerial vehicle to photograph Savannah, Georgia’s suburbs. Because these devices, more commonly referred to as “drones,” have blurred the line between public and private spaces, Ward’s project also explores the ethics of the intimacy offered by the uninvited drone. Each photograph is the result of stitching together hundreds of separate exposures using methods inspired by cartography and archaeology.
