Strong Winds and Powerful Currents

Artist: Miller Taylor

Project: Upon Sand

Description: In Upon Sand, Miller Taylor investigates the shifting sands of the North Carolina coastline. His sprawling photos capture places where sand “is shaped as much by state and federal governmental agencies, developers, conservationists, and the New Deal as it is by the wind and waves.” These images depict the built environment of the state’s beaches, featuring places where ocean, sand, and now-fragile construction come together in a unified landscape.

Eyes on the South is curated by Jeff Rich. The weekly series features selections of current work from Southern artists, or artists whose photography concerns the South.
