An Overwhelming Cacophony
By Ian Mahathey
Artist: Ian Mahathey
Project: The Sound the Dryfly Makes
Description: In The Sound the Dryfly Makes, Ian Mahathey considers how boyhood aspirations are transformed by adulthood. Although the photographs initially capture a youthful vigor, the collection “morphs as the responsibilities and realities of adulthood are approached and eventually taken on.” Much like the sound of the dryfly, which is a colloquial term for cicada, Mahathey describes this work as “quiet at first and developing into an overwhelming cacophony.”
