Carter Mathes is an associate professor of English at Rutgers University. He has written a book, Imagine the Sound: Experimental African American Literature After Civil Rights, and is working on second, Ecologies of Funk. He has published essays in venues including Small Axe, Contemporary Literature, Oxford American, Callaloo, and African American Review.
